Bestnet Upgrades Sprint DS3 to an OC3 connection

Upgrading our Sprint backbone connection now gives our data center two OC3 backbone connections through Sprint, and Level 3 Communications. Our data center is also supplied with an OC12 connection through AT&T, and an OC48 connection through MCI WorldCOM.

Just to give you an example, a DS3 line is a super high speed connection capable of transmitting data at a rate of 45 million bps (bits per second). A T3 line represents a bandwidth equal to about 672 regular voice grade telephone lines, which is wide enough to transmit full motion, real-time video, and very large databases over a busy network. Upgrading that DS3 to an OC3 has the effect of nearly that 4 times greater than a DS3.

The chart below shows a comparison of transfer rate capacity for the different kinds of network lines that are currently available.

  • DS1 - 1.544 megabits per second (24 DS0 lines)
  • DS3 - 43.232 megabits per second (28 T1s)
  • OC3 - 155 megabits per second (100 T1s)
  • OC12 - 622 megabits per second (4 OC3s)
  • OC48 - 2.5 gigabits per seconds (4 OC12s)
  • OC192 - 9.6 gigabits per second (4 OC48s)
